Guterres: Significant reduction of US foreign aid goes against US global interests

On March 1st, UN Secretary General Guterres stated on February 28th that a significant reduction in US foreign aid would have serious consequences for the world’s most vulnerable groups and would go against US global interests. He hoped that the US would revoke the relevant decision. Guterres expressed deep concern at a press conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the same day that UN agencies and some non-governmental organizations had received notices from the United States in the past two days that they would significantly reduce funding. This move by the United States will affect a series of key projects, including humanitarian aid, disaster reduction, development, counter-terrorism, and drug trafficking, and have destructive consequences for the world’s most vulnerable groups. Humanitarian aid operations in countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine, and South Sudan will be impacted to varying degrees. Guterres stated that the reduction of foreign aid by the United States will harm the health, safety, and prosperity of the world, and that reducing the role and influence of the United States in the global humanitarian cause goes against its interests globally. He hopes that the US side will carefully consider and revoke the relevant decision.
