On February 16th, officials from the Wyoming Department of Health announced on the 14th that an elderly woman in the southeastern part of the state was hospitalized due to infection with avian influenza. This is the first case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus in the state, which is transmitted through animals and some people. The Wyoming Department of Health stated that the infected individual may have been infected through direct contact with an infected poultry flock at home, and she has been hospitalized for treatment.
