On January 25th, according to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, on January 24th local time, Iraqi border troops were attacked by armed members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party while carrying out border duties in the Dohuk Province of the Kurdish Autonomous Region in northern Iraq, and a firefight occurred, resulting in the death of two Iraqi border troops and one injury. Two Kurdish Workers’ Party militants were killed. The PKK was founded in 1979, seeking to establish an independent state in the Kurdish populated areas at the border between Türkiye and Iraq, Iran and Syria by force, and was listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye. In recent years, Türkiye has continued to carry out high-pressure attacks on Kurdish armed forces across Syria and Iraq.
