Heavy rainfall hits Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo, entering flood alert state

On January 25th, the Municipal Emergency Management Center (CGE) in S ã o Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, announced on the afternoon of January 24th that heavy rainfall had put all areas of the city on flood alert. At the same time, the civil defense department issued a heavy rainfall warning to citizens through text messages. By 16:30 of the same day, heavy rainfall had led to more than 120000 users in the city losing power, and part of the roof of a shopping center in the city also collapsed in the rainstorm. The rainfall also caused traffic congestion in multiple sections of the city, and subway operations were also affected. The meteorological department predicts that there will still be local thunderstorms in the city in the next few days, which may cause floods, collapse of trees, and rising river water levels.
