On January 10th, the United Nations Security Council issued a statement after a meeting on the situation in Lebanon on January 9th, welcoming Joseph Aoun’s election as the new president of Lebanon, ending the country’s two-year presidential vacancy. The members of the Security Council emphasized that in order to address the political, economic, and security challenges faced by Lebanon, the election of a president is crucial for ensuring the full functioning of national institutions. The members of the Security Council reiterated their firm support for the territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and political independence of Lebanon, expressed their commitment to the stability of Lebanon, and called for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) and relevant historical resolutions of the Security Council on Lebanon.
