EU report: Number of illegal border crossings in Schengen area drops to lowest since 2021

On April 24th, the European Commission released a report stating that there were 240000 illegal border crossings in the Schengen area in 2024, a decrease of 38% from 2023 and the lowest level since 2021. The EU stated in the report that it will continue to strengthen the political and operational governance of the Schengen area, accelerate the implementation of digitization to prevent security risks, enhance cooperation between law enforcement agencies, deepen relations with neighboring and other partner countries to strengthen border protection, and further improve the effectiveness of measures to repatriate individuals without legal residency. The report states that in 2024, the Schengen area will once again become the world’s most popular tourist destination, receiving over 500 million visitors and injecting strong momentum into the EU’s economic growth.
