On March 29th, Mexican President Simbaum expressed opposition to the unilateral imposition of a 25% car tariff by the United States. Mexico is the country with the highest degree of integration with the United States in the automotive industry. The integration of the automotive industries between the two countries has been ongoing for decades, with approximately 2.5 million cars exported from Mexico to the United States last year. Obviously, any tariffs will affect integration and the economies of Mexico and the United States, so Mexico firmly opposes such unilateral tariff decisions. Simbaum said that Mexico is currently seeking to strengthen the US Mexico Canada trade agreement signed with the US government, hoping that the trade integration between Mexico and the US in the automotive manufacturing sector will not be affected, in order to protect stable employment in both countries. Simbaum reiterated that Mexico will wait for a “comprehensive response” from Trump after announcing new tariff measures on April 2nd. Mexico is formulating comprehensive response measures to strengthen the national economy and address unilateral actions, while the negotiation process with the United States is still ongoing, striving to ensure stable employment, maintain investment, and avoid harming US and Canadian interests.
