On March 29th, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech in Montreal, introducing his phone call with US President Trump that morning. Carney said, “President Trump has expressed respect for Canada’s sovereignty in both private and public comments today.” Regarding tariffs and trade issues, Carney stated that the leaders of the two countries have agreed to engage in “comprehensive negotiations” on a new economic and security relationship. However, Trump did not make any concessions on the threat of tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum during the call.
