CGN adds new wind power project to clean energy base in northern Laos

Vientiane, March 21 (Xinhua) — The Laotian government and CGN Energy Technology (Laos) Co., Ltd. signed a development agreement for the 556 MW wind power project of the second phase of the Laos Northern Interconnection Clean Energy Base in Vientiane on the 20th.

At the signing ceremony, the Minister of Energy and Mines of Laos, Posey Sayason, said that the Northern Laos Interconnection Clean Energy Base Project is another major achievement of deepening practical cooperation and jointly building the “the Belt and Road” between China and Laos following the China Laos railway, and is also a strategic energy project that is interdependent with the China Laos 500 kV grid connection project. I hope this project can become a model project for power cooperation in the Lancang Mekong region, further expanding the power grid interconnection and mutual assistance between Laos and neighboring countries.

Zhang Chaoqun, President of China General Nuclear Power International Holdings Limited, stated that China General Nuclear Power will rely on China’s technological advantages and mature experience in the field of new energy to continue to support Laos’ clean energy layout and local clean energy talent cultivation.

It is reported that the Northern Interconnection Clean Energy Base Project in Laos is an important supporting power project for China Laos power interconnection, spanning the provinces of Oudomxay, Phongshali, and Langnantha in Laos, and will build integrated clean energy bases such as wind, solar, water, and storage. This project will significantly enhance the stability and reliability of power supply, and promote higher-level and more sustainable power interconnection between China and Laos.

At present, the first phase of the Udomsa Province photovoltaic project has started construction in December 2024 and completed the installation of the first batch of photovoltaic modules. The second phase of the project includes photovoltaic projects in Luang Nam Pag and Udomxay provinces, as well as the wind power project signed this time. After the completion and operation of the first and second phases of the project, the annual power generation is expected to reach 4.5 billion kilowatt hours.
