US Treasury Department extends special measures to address debt ceiling issue

On March 15th, it was reported that on March 14th local time, US Treasury Secretary Besson stated in a letter to lawmakers that the Treasury Department would extend the use of special measures until June 27th to allow the federal government to pay bills until Congress resolves the debt ceiling issue. According to reports, the United States reached a debt ceiling of approximately $36 trillion on January 21, forcing the Treasury Department to take special measures and use cash on hand to avoid default. Besent pointed out that due to “considerable uncertainty,” the Treasury Department cannot estimate how long special measures and cash can last, and the department is expected to report the latest situation to Congress in early May.
