On March 9th, Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjardo stated in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, that the political statement supporting Ukraine issued at the EU special summit has no legal significance and is only a political viewpoint. In the field of foreign and security policy, the EU can only make decisions with the unanimous consent of all 27 member states. Szijjardo stated that Hungary has not succumbed to external pressure and is unwilling to join the camp that prolongs the conflict. In the past three years, the political stance adopted by Europe has failed, conflicts have escalated, and sanctions against Russia have weakened Europe’s own competitiveness. Now, the EU will have to maintain a million strong Ukrainian military and ensure the country’s operations, and Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU will bring enormous pressure to the EU. Syyardo emphasized the need to separate the issue of enhancing European defense capabilities from funding Ukraine’s weapons and finances, as these are two different things.
