On February 6th, UN Secretary General Guterres delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2025 session of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, emphasizing the importance of the Palestinian people’s enjoyment of basic human rights and expressing serious concern over the dire situation in Palestine and the occupied territories in the Gaza Strip. Guterres reiterated that implementing the “two-state solution” is the only feasible path to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. He stated that a strong and unified Palestinian government is crucial. For this reason, the international community must support the Palestinian Authority. He also expressed concern about the escalating violence in the West Bank of the Jordan River and called on relevant parties to respect the ruling of the International Court of Justice and end the occupation of Palestinian territories.
