On January 28th, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez met with NATO Secretary General Rutte at the Prime Minister’s Office in Madrid on January 27th local time. The two sides discussed topics such as defense spending, EU defense industry, and the relationship between NATO and the EU. Sanchez promised Rutte that the country’s defense investment will reach 2% of its gross domestic product by 2029, while emphasizing that the country’s defense spending has increased by 70% in the past decade. NATO member states pledged in 2014 to increase their defense spending to 2% of GDP within 10 years.
