US Defense Secretary candidate admits to paying $50000 to settle sexual assault allegations, Senate still advances nomination

On January 24th, during his Senate confirmation hearing, US President Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, Pete Hagerce, admitted that he had paid a $50000 secret settlement to a woman accused of sexual assault in 2017, but denied any wrongdoing. Haigesese previously told the police that the incident was a voluntary act by both parties, and he also referred to it as a “false accusation” during the confirmation hearing. After a comprehensive investigation, he has now been completely cleared of the charges. According to the investigation report, the woman accused Hagibis of sexually assaulting her in a hotel room in California and prevented her from leaving. The local police had suggested transferring the case to the Monterey County District Prosecutor’s Office for review. The Monterey County prosecutor stated that due to insufficient evidence, the office decided not to prosecute in January 2018. Despite ongoing controversy, the US Senate pushed forward the nomination process for Hagibis through a partisan vote on January 23, but a minority including two Republican senators expressed opposition to it.
