On January 3rd, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued a statement on January 2nd local time, stating that since October 2023, with the support of WHO, only 5383 patients have been evacuated from the Gaza Strip, of which only 436 patients were evacuated after the closure of the Rafa crossing. At present, there are still over 12000 people in need of medical evacuation, and at this rate, it will take 5 to 10 years to evacuate all critically ill patients (including thousands of children). During this period, their condition may worsen or even lead to death. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged Israel to increase the approval rate for medical evacuations, accelerate the approval process, and allow the use of all possible border crossings for safe evacuations.
