Last year, the number of illegal immigrants in the English Channel exceeded 36000, and the death toll reached a record high

However, the death toll in 2024 set a record. According to United Nations agencies, at least 77 people died attempting to cross the border throughout the year. Since 2018, over 150000 people have illegally arrived in the UK by small boats. A spokesperson for the UK Home Office stated that the UK is working with France to prevent illegal immigration while ensuring border security. The UK government emphasizes that the current focus of cooperation with France is to combat human trafficking gangs and reduce the risk of illegal immigrants using dangerous and rudimentary boats.
