Ukrainian officials: International security guarantees are crucial in Ukraine’s temporary accession plan to the treaty

On December 30th, according to the website of the Ukrainian “Censorate” on the 29th, Andriy Melinik, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, recently stated in an interview with German media that international security guarantees are crucial in the temporary security solution for Ukraine before joining NATO. Melinik said that joining NATO is still on the Ukrainian agenda, but for the temporary solution before Ukraine’s accession to the treaty, international security guarantees are of paramount importance. He emphasized that the international security guarantees provided by Western allies “must go beyond pure political promises” and must carefully elaborate on what military means partner countries will use to protect Ukraine when it is attacked again. Melinik believes that Ukraine can sign bilateral or multilateral security agreements with Western allies, and Ukraine needs Western allies to provide a “firm defense commitment” with international legal binding force. Melinik said that international security guarantees may become part of a future peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia.
