On December 24th, in response to President elect Trump’s recent threat to “reclaim” the Panama Canal, Mexico and Colombia both expressed their support for Panama’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the 23rd local time. Mexican President Simbaum stated at a regular press conference on the 23rd that Mexico’s position on international issues must respect the sovereignty of all countries. She said, “The Panama Canal belongs to the people of Panama, and this is our solidarity and support for the President and people of Panama.” On the same day, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement stating that the Colombian government is committed to supporting the Republic of Panama in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement pointed out that Colombia respects the principles of international law, especially the principle of “pacta sunt servanda”, which requires the implementation of signed treaties. Any attempt to interfere with the management of this important resource in international trade is an insult to Panama’s sovereignty. The statement also stated that Colombia calls on the international community to abide by agreements that guarantee peace and regional stability, and reaffirms its support for the independence, sovereignty, and dignity of Panama and all countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
