Colombian rebels declare unilateral ceasefire during New Year holiday

On December 22nd, the Colombian anti-government armed group “National Liberation Armed Forces of Colombia” issued a statement announcing a unilateral ceasefire during the New Year holiday. The statement states that the ceasefire will begin at midnight on December 23 and end at midnight on January 3, 2025. Colombian President Petro subsequently reposted the statement on social media, stating that ending the war is the country’s goal by 2025. The Colombian National Liberation Army was founded in 1964 and is the second largest anti-government guerrilla organization in Colombia. In November 2022, the Colombian government and the “National Liberation Armed Forces of Colombia” began peace negotiations in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. In February of this year, the armed group continued to attack government forces. Colombian Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez announced on August 5th that military operations against the anti-government armed group “Colombian National Liberation Army” will resume, and the ceasefire agreement previously implemented by both sides will not be extended after it expires on August 3rd.
