China holds groundbreaking ceremony for Madagascar hydropower project

Xinhua News Agency, Antananarivo, December 20th (Reporter Ling Xin) – The groundbreaking ceremony for the Ranumafana hydropower station project in Madagascar, constructed by China Hydropower Construction Group, was held on the 19th. Madagascar President Rajoelina attended the groundbreaking ceremony and delivered a speech.

On behalf of the Malian government and people, Rajoelina expresses sincere gratitude to the Chinese government. He pointed out that Madagascar is committed to developing renewable energy such as hydropower. After the project is completed, it will significantly enhance the stability of the power grid in the capital region, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, significantly reduce power generation costs, and improve economic benefits. It will also help Madagascar achieve its goal of doubling the national electricity penetration rate by 2030, laying a solid foundation for the country’s economic takeoff and green development.

At the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar Ji Ping stated that the Lanumafana hydropower project is another milestone in the cooperation between China and Madagascar. After the project is completed and put into operation, it will effectively alleviate the power supply pressure in the Antananarivo area, optimize the energy structure of Malaysia, effectively reduce electricity costs, and effectively promote the economic and social development and improvement of people’s livelihoods in Malaysia.

It is reported that the hydropower project is located in the northwest of the capital of Malaysia, with an installed capacity of 64 megawatts, making it the largest cooperation project between China and Malaysia since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
