On December 18th, the “New Shanghai” vessel under COSCO Shipping arrived at Yangshan Port in Shanghai after a 23 day voyage from Qiankai Port in Peru. This is the first official “Qiankai Shanghai” voyage since the opening of Qiankai Port in Peru, marking the first two-way sea voyage from Qiankai Port to Shanghai Port.

Qian Kaigang is a key project of the “the Belt and Road” jointly built by China and Peru. After the opening of Qiankai Port, the sea freight time from Peru to China has been significantly reduced to about 23 days, saving logistics costs by more than 20%. More than 8000 direct employment opportunities will be created for Peru every year.

David Gamero, Deputy Manager of the Engineering Department of the Qiankai Port Project, believes that Qiankai Port will help Peru improve maritime efficiency and deepen international trade cooperation with the Asian region. In addition, the mega port will also serve as a regional hub, driving the overall logistics value chain development in South America and generating a multiplier effect.

Qiankai Port is also the first smart and green port in South America. The port is equipped with electric container trucks with autonomous driving technology to improve container operation efficiency. There is also an animal rescue station built in the port to help improve the habitat environment of surrounding organisms and contribute to the sustainable development of the local economy and society.

Qiankai Port, a new starting point of the Inca ancient road in the new era, is opening up a new channel for trade between China and Latin America. From Qian Kai to Shanghai, a new chapter of the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ will be written.
