Colombo, August 13 (Xinhua) — The first harvesting event of mango demonstration base buyers for the South South Cooperation Project between China, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and Sri Lanka was recently held in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
Officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, Munasinha, stated at the event that Chinese tropical agriculture experts have provided strong technical support for the development of Sri Lanka’s mango industry, bringing about a more efficient and sustainable mango production chain. They hope that China will continue to share agricultural technology experience with Sri Lanka and help more farmers achieve increased production and income.

Ratnayak, the director of Sri Lanka’s National Institute of Post Harvest Management, said that participating in mango harvesting activities has shown him the enormous potential of Chinese technology in promoting the development of Sri Lanka’s mango industry, and he looks forward to strengthening agricultural technology exchanges and cooperation with China.
Sun Dequan, the leader of the Chinese expert group for this project, stated at the event that the expert group will further strengthen cooperation and exchange with Sri Lankan counterparts, rely on China’s advanced technology and experience, and optimize and improve the planting management process in combination with Sri Lanka’s actual situation and needs.

According to the Chinese expert group, the project will be launched in May 2023. According to the agreement, China will select experts and technicians in the fields of tropical crops such as bananas, mangoes, and pineapples to carry out a two-year technical assistance mission in Sri Lanka. During this period, a team of Chinese experts went deep into the base and fully participated in the construction and management of the orchard, providing technical guidance to local agricultural technicians and farmers.
