The Central First Ecological Environment Protection Inspection Group held its first plenary session and temporary party branch meeting at its headquarters in Shanghai.
The Yangtze River is the mother river of the Chinese nation, nurturing generations of Chinese children and creating a millennium long cultural heritage from the Bashan and Shu rivers to the Jiangnan water towns. The passionate commentary and the beautiful scenery of the Yangtze River on the screen caught the attention of the inspection team members.
On May 9, 2024, the Central First Ecological Environment Protection Inspection Group held its first plenary session and temporary party branch meeting at its headquarters in Shanghai. At the meeting, all members of the inspection team also had a special learning session – reviewing the “2023 Yangtze River Economic Belt Ecological Environment Warning Film”.
The warning film exposed a series of prominent ecological and environmental issues along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, including inadequate steel production capacity in 11 provinces and cities, frequent illegal fishing, illegal capture and sale of wild animals, illegal landfill, environmental pollution and ecological damage, through open inspections and undercover investigations. This further deepened the understanding of the inspection team members on the importance of ecological and environmental protection in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
“The coordinated development of river basin inspections and provincial inspections is not only an innovative move to deepen the central ecological environment protection inspection based on a systematic concept, but also an inspection to promote the in-depth implementation of regional major strategies through ecological civilization construction. We should combine this new task and new requirements, comprehensively promote the in-depth development of inspections, and through inspections, promote Shanghai to better play a leading role in ecological civilization construction demonstration, helping Shanghai to support high-quality development with high-quality ecological environment.”
Based on the content of the warning video, Zhang Xueqiao, the deputy leader of the inspection team, put forward work requirements for the entry work of this inspection, clarifying that members of the inspection team should view and accurately analyze the ecological environment problems existing in Shanghai from multiple perspectives.
Zhang Xueqiao said, “This inspection focuses on the protection of the Yangtze River, and coordinates the implementation of basin inspections and provincial inspections. We need to look at the common and individual problems in Shanghai from the common laws and legal standards of the Yangtze River Basin. We need to look at the shortcomings of Shanghai from the relative standards of regional coordinated development, and study the ecological environment problems across provincial (city) administrative divisions. We need to look at the challenges faced by Shanghai from the individual positioning of an internationalized mega city and a forefront of opening up to the outside world. Currently, China has become a leader in global ecological environment protection. How should Shanghai take on its role and better play a leading and demonstrative role in promoting high-quality economic development and high-level ecological environment protection in a coordinated manner is also a challenge for inspection.” The direction that the group needs to think about
The problem orientation of the warning film has inspired the members of the on-site inspection team. “Focusing on watching the ‘2023 Yangtze River Economic Belt Ecological Environment Warning Film’ is beneficial for us to combine the characteristics of Shanghai and ‘draw an accurate picture’ for this mega city. It also gives us a deeper understanding of focusing on key issues, adhering to the people-centered approach, and achieving precise, scientific, and lawful inspections. Next, we will do our best to do a good job in all aspects of inspection work,” a comrade from the inspection team told reporters.
