Focusing on the breakthrough of intelligent open source operating systems for automobiles

The 2024 Beijing International Automobile Exhibition will be held from April 25th to May 4th, marking the second time in four years that the exhibition has been held. There are 117 global first cars (including 30 global first cars from multinational corporations), 41 concept cars, and 278 new energy vehicle models. During the Media Day on April 25th and 26th, participating companies held a total of 163 press conferences, setting a new historical high.

In addition to various new car displays and releases, the automotive related software industry is also receiving attention. Under the wave of intelligent connected vehicles, the concept of software defined cars has gradually become a consensus. The future will determine the personalized differences in automobiles through dimensions such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing technology, and the automotive operating system that carries out all of these provides the foundation for implementation.

Elektrobit, a supplier of embedded interconnect software products and services for the automotive industry, recently announced the launch of the world’s first open-source operating system solution that complies with automotive functional safety standards, EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications, for functional safety applications. This innovative solution has received active technical evaluation from SEooC (Independent Security Unit) and complies with two safety standards, ISO 26262 ASIL B and IEC 61508 SIL 2. A press conference was held during the Beijing Auto Show. It is reported that this solution can provide up to 15 years of maintenance to ensure the safety of the product throughout its entire lifecycle.

Mike Robertson, chief product officer and managing director of Elektrobit, said that the solution launched this time can help automobile manufacturers and suppliers to use Linux in safety related high-performance computing (HPC) functional areas such as Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV), and users will soon see more and more advanced software defined cars on the road.

According to McKinsey’s data, by 2030, the global market size of automotive generalized operating systems can reach $50 billion, and there is significant growth potential for the automotive operating system market in the future. The automotive operating system, as the underlying infrastructure for managing and controlling intelligent automotive hardware and software resources, provides the operating environment, mechanism, communication mechanism, and security mechanism for automotive software, and is the most fundamental infrastructure for achieving automotive intelligence.

Currently, China’s production of intelligent vehicles and new energy vehicles has ranked among the top in the world, and the expansion of scale has also posed challenges to the domestic intelligent vehicle software industry chain. In the field of open source operating systems for automobiles, in addition to multinational suppliers, domestic related industries are also actively researching and developing. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has released the China Automotive Operating System Open Source Plan in 2023. At this year’s Beijing Auto Show, several local related companies also showcased their products for developing automotive operating systems.
